Hello everyone,

I wanted to share some more of my JC2 knowledge, this time pertaining to cut content. I have discovered a lot of possible cut content within the JC2 game files, and I think that the JC wiki deserves a page on the subject.

Unfortunately there are no tools for JC1, so we have little to no idea what was cut, and what was left in the files. We all know about the Octavio, so that's really the only confirmed piece of cut content in that whole game. Nobody knows why it was removed; it even made it into the Prima guide, but rumor had it that it had an issue that was related to the Leisureliner debacle.

-- please note that I'm not suggesting that Avalanche pulled a 2K Czech during development; I'm sure everything got cut for a very good reason, and that we have a better game as a result of the cut content being cut --

Birds - I'm sure you've all seen the horrible 2D birds that fly around the JC2 game world. Using Jman100's build world to bring objects from the files into the game world I was able to find a fully modeled 3D seagull. There was also the black bird from Razman's office, but that one is actually in the game. If you're on PC you can go on Jman's server and spawn a bird yourself in build world. It's on the list. Seems like this got cut because 3D animated birds would be a waste of resources.

Airport characters - I found four character models that relate to airports - two male pilots and two female flight attendants. They have the civilian bone structure, so you can't play as them in JC2MP, but you can see their models by extracting their "cdoll" files and using Gibbed's model viewer to look at them.

Remember when Blaine calls the Roaches men in "real nice Italian suits"? Well, they don't wear anything like that in the final game; they've got some ridiculous neon colored outfits like the other factions. They were probably changed at some point to look more recognizable, as "real nice Italian suits" would look a lot like the Panau Secret Service.

Police got cut. Originally there wasn't just the military, but there were cops too. It's obvious if you dig into the files, but you can also see in-game that one of the cars in the game used to be a police car, but its model got switched. I already told GMRE about this and he edited that vehicle's page as a result. The truck that appears in game still has the siren and it handles more like a sports car than a pickup truck. In the files there's a police character that isn't seen in game but can be played in JC2MP because it's rigged with the combat bone model.

Taxi drivers that drive Rico arond - I'm going to have to dig this up again since my YouTube channel got closed (I had a video of this up before it went down), but yeah, there's taxi driver dialogue in the files. Check the captions file in the game files, press ctrl+F and type "put a marker" and it should come up with the quote "put a marker on your PDA man, I'll take you there". There are others that accompany this quote.

Melee combat seems to have been a solution for the developers at one point that allowed the military to kick Rico back if he got too close. There are two animations for this in the game, and I found them on Jman's testing server when it allowed animation browsing.

Air combat was a thing, too. There is an early trailer for the game which depicted this planned feature (it was called the "attract video" and Mike Oldman showed it during a vlog before he disappeared). I'm guessing it was scrapped very early on because of the difficulty of programming such a feature into a massive map. JC1 had it, but the planes were pretty stupid, and it's worth noting that that game used its own AI engine, whereas JC2 uses the Path Engine, which works well for soldiers and vehicles that must pursue Rico, but for navigating in the 3D space it's not ideal. JC2's AI choppers were pretty stupid.

Camo military - the whole game used to look much darker early on, and certain assets didn't have the cartoony look to them that's seen in the final game. My next piece of cut content on this list will further that notion. Aside from many of the planes looking more silvery and realistic, the military once had camouflage outfits on, rather than the bright red uniforms in the final game. An image of a troop firing a scoped weapon that wasn't in the full game (the scope isn't, but the gun might be...it appears to be an assault rifle) can be seen posted around Panau City, but you can also find this pic of the beta online.

Gore. There's an effect in the game files that depicts the gruesome death of a person...their body exploding into pieces. It's very disturbing and feels extremely out of place in a game like JC2. In fact, I don't think there are any GTA clones that have gruesomely exploding bodies. Anyways, Jman, on his server, has made it so that when you die this effect is triggered on your character, so you can see it if you go there.

There's more dialogue in the game files that wasn't used. Originally the civilians said things like "man, that guy should be in Olympic", presumably when they saw Rico pulling off his outrageous maneuvers. I'm guessing this got cut because it got annoying for playtesters. I can see why, but it's odd that they don't react to Rico at all.

Races. This one deserves its own damn page. Those strange, empty race tracks around Panau are all indexed in the game files, and were part of the cut Panauan racing circuit. There was a character called Demonica who would introduce you to different races, and her model is still in the game files, and you can play as her in JC2MP. Her actual speech isn't in the game files, but the subtitles file has her quotes scripted. You can open it and pretty much just search for "race" and find some of her lines. I have no idea why this got cut, since there was obviously working racing AI, judging by the only race track that actually has people racing on it in game. My only guess is that it wasn't finished, so they replaced it with Race Challenges, which are infinitely more easy to program.

Here's something a little smaller...the sharkatron fin. Anybody notice that "Jürgen Tech" is written on it? I saw the cryptic thing about Eidos on the Sharkatron's wiki page, but what does that even mean? Outsourced by Eidos? A one man company? A Maybe this was once tied to a cut mission? Anybody know? It just seems like an odd thing to be an Easter Egg.

At one point faction missions were spilt into two categories: faction "missions" and faction "tasks". In the game's indexes they're clearly separated. Maybe this was just a storage thing, but I doubt it. They probably got merged to increase uniformity, so they wouldn't confuse any players.

There's a silly animation of Rico spinning. Type "/oldski" into the chat on Jman's server to see it in action. It is probably the only part of the cut "skydiving stunts" that was left in the game files.

Finally, during E3 of 2010 I remember an interview with a JC2 devs which had JC2 gameplay in the background. During the video behind the dev Rico stood still on top of the Panau Casino, and he had idling animations: stretching his legs and performing the sign of the cross. He did this in JC1 too, since he's Catholic. I guess they took out the idling animations because not only can they be distracting to the player, who might be trying to enjoy the scenery, but idle anims were out of style by the time JC2 came out.

Thanks to User:Norrlanning96 for closing the old thread so I could open this one.
