The 21-J Smart-Rifle is a weapon in Just Cause 4.

Appearance[]

This weapon is a "combat rifle" with a bullpup design, meaning the magazine fits in behind the trigger near the stock. It seems to be based of the Famas F-1, with some design elements seemingly take from the OTS-14 Groza. A high-tech looking optic is mounted on the carry handle. The side of the weapon indicates that it uses 5.56 x 30 ammo.

Performance[]

This weapon is something of a semi-automatic to battle rifle hybrid. It is a pretty powerful rifle as it can take out a Black Hand private in two shots, although infantry wearing body armor can survive about three to four shots. It has pretty good accuracy and damage range. It is best used for medium-long range combat, as a shorter range sniper (a DMR).

Although its appearance suggests this weapon is a semi-automatic assault rifle, it actually behaves more like a designated marksman rifle (a sniper, weaker in fire power but much more versatile for different combat scenarios) without any sort of magnified optics. In terms of functionality and design, it is more of a battle rifle.

Pressing the Secondary Fire whilst holding this weapon makes it fire guided bullets that "home in" on infantry targets in an automatic firing fashion. The bullets can somehow curve and change direction mid-air. The gun will continuously fire bullets at the locked target until either the target is dead, or the weapon is out of ammo (no more bullets in the currently used magazine).

Its lack of a full-auto mode makes it difficult to use in close quarters combat, but that's what the secondary fire is for. One should only tap fire at short intervals in close quarters situations, as doing so significantly increases recoil and decreases accuracy. At longer ranges, slow and steady wins the race.

Trivia[]

  • At first glance, the 21 in the name could be referencing the 21 rounds in a magazine for this weapon. However, this is just a coincidence. For example, AK-47s don't have 47 rounds in a magazine and M16 rifles don't have 16 rounds in a magazine.
    • The 47 in AK-47 come's from being designed in 1947.
    • In M16, M stands for the Model and 16 being the Model number. Numerous American weapons share this trait prior to the M16 (M1 Garand, M2 Browning, M14 Rifle) and after after the M16 (M21 Rifle, M26 Shotgun, M27 Infantry Rifle).
    • Based on these, the 21 is unlikely to represent the ammunition count. It's more likely being Model 21 of the weapon, with J being a configuration type.
  • The "62" as maximum ammunition carried seems a bit odd, as most weapons in the game usually have an ammo capacity of 3 times the ammo in the magazine. This may be a developer oversight, because it's only one off from 3 times the magazine.
  • By the way it behaves, this weapon is somewhat of a successor to the UPM61 from Just Cause 3.
    • Although possibly a coincidence, both the 21-J and the UPM61 are bullpup weapons.
