The Armadillo Forklift a.k.a. Armadillo 506 is a vehicle in Just Cause 4.

Name[]

This vehicle has 3 names:

  • Initially the vehicle was called "Armadillo Montacargas" in some pre-release videos.
  • It was later renamed to "Armadillo Forklift", along with many other vehicles that got silly attachments to their names like "van", "bus" and such.
  • It has "Armadillo 506" written on the side of the hydraulic arm, indicating that in-universe, this might be its official name.

Description[]

It is defined as a forklift, but the design is that of a 4-wheeled rough terrain mobile crane with a forklift attachment to its arm. From some angles, it looks like the top half of the vehicle should be able to rotate, but there seems to be no turntable between the base and the cabin/boom structure.

The vehicle has a large arm which, despite appearing to be telescopic and with 3 articulated joints, cannot be extended and stays in an L-shaped position. It also has stabilization outriggers (hydraulic legs) that can't be lowered, but tilt with the motion of the vehicle when turning.

In reality, most vehicles of this type are actually legal for road traffic, but this particular vehicle does not have any traffic-relevant lights, so it would not be. This is reflected by the vehicle never appearing in road traffic.

Performance[]

The top speed is quite remarkable for a vehicle of this type. Handling is decent because, unlike most real-life mobile cranes, it has front-wheel steering. Also, it has rear wheel drive.

Due to its powerful arm, it's possible to lift and flip cars and small airplanes, but using it as an actual forklift is limited in that the fork can't be lowered all the way onto the ground, so it's almost impossible to get it under a target object.

Another use is to crush vehicles and destructibles by using the fork as a hammer.

The vehicles collision model is hilariously out of balance (or something like that). Driving at high speed and then lowering the fork into the ground causes all the wheels to lose contact with the ground and slide forward while balanced on the pointy tips of the fork.

Trivia[]

  • It's made by the fictional company Armadillo.
  • Some real vehicles of this type can rotate their top half (similar to a crane, or excavator) and others can not. The ones that can not are normally either smaller and cheaper, or have a more powerful boom for heavier loads.
  • Realistically the stabilizing legs would be among the most rigidly connected components and would absolutely not move like that, other than perhaps the little loosely hinged plates at their ends.
  • The front wheel turning is also a realistic option, because modern vehicles of this and similar type can switch their hydraulically controlled turning system from front wheel turning to rear wheel turning and to all wheel turning. Some vehicles can even make all their wheels turn to the same direction, making the vehicles drive at an angle with out turning.
