The beached whale is a dead sea creature in Just Cause 2.
Description[]
This is considered to be an easter egg in Just Cause 2.
The whale is a sperm whale, which grows to about 20 meters in length in real life. The one in Panau is around 30 meters in length.
One part of it is marked as an enemy by the red aiming box. If damaged enough (by gunfire or explosives), it will partly explode, revealing a collectible armor part in its partially exposed ribcage. When the whale explodes, it releases a cloud of green gas that will stay in the immediate vicinity of the whale. The most efficient way (in terms of time and ammunition usage) to get to the collectable item is by Triggered Explosives; Fragmentation Grenades, or the Grenade Launcher.
Location[]
X:29610; Y:31340, in the Selatan Archipelago.
Oddly, the whale is on the beach of a shallow lake. Considering how heavy it must be, there's no way for a storm, or a tidal wave, to carry it that far inland with out also clearing the forest away from the area. Tides do not rise that much anywhere on earth and if they did, it would completely flood all of Panau's coastal settlements.
The area could not have been under water in the past, because trees take decades to grow while a dead whale rots away with in months (not necessarily entirely, but it would look very decayed).
It could not have been the result of a tsunami, because a wave big enough to carry the whale would have caused complete devastation to all of southern Panau. Nearly all of Panau Tengah Bay would have its trees washed away and nothing would remain of the settlements on the southern coast save for elevated terrain.
Trivia[]
- The whale may be a reference to an event that occurred on the Oregon coast in 1970, where state highway officials, trying to dispose of a beached whale carcass, attempted to blow it up with dynamite.
- Dead whales often explode on their own. This happens when a lot of poisonous gases form an increasingly large bubble inside the rotting body. There's plenty of videos of whale explosions on YouTube, where the bubble bursts and a large amount of rotten whale guts are sent flying to a range of about 10 meters.
