It's the screen on the grappler.

Description

The CommLink is a multi-function electronic device integrated into Rico's grappler. It has a small, curved (touch?)screen and the map can be seen when it is not in use.

When used by the player, it's the name of a menu for in-game things: The CommLink has five features: Map, Rebel Drop, Gear Mods, Leaderboards and Progress.

In the mission Friends Like These..., it is said that The Agency has given CommLinks to all the rebels in exchange for unknown favors in the future. It is unknown how their's work, or what they look like (rebels are never seen wearing them, in-game or in cutscenes), but theirs are definitely not part of grapplers.

Trivia

  • In previous games in the Just Cause game series this is called the PDA.
  • The CommLink cannot be used on Boom Island.
  • In some of the DLC missions, the CommLink seems to have a “FaceTime”-like app.
  • It is strange that The Agency can afford so many of these likely considerably expensive devices, and even stranger that they are willing to give every rebel one.
