Darkwater is a faction in the cancelled Just Cause: Mobile.
Description[]
They were first named in a press release by Square Enix where they were mentioned to be the game's enemy faction.
The game's announcement trailer features a few action scenes that show enemy soldiers and vehicles.
It has been revealed on Discord (there was an official promotional server for the game) that Darkwater was formed by the remnants of the Black Hand in JC4 and that they have become a threat to The Agency, which in turn formed Firebrand to tackle them.
In the trailer, there was also a bald man with a suit and glasses, portrayed as a prominent antagonist. Seeing as Darkwater is the main antagonistic faction, this man could logically be an important member, though his occupation remains unknown. It has been revealed over social media that "Your first day as a new Firebrand agent gets off to an explosive start! A private army known as Darkwater attacks your base, leaving chaos in its wake. Your task is to investigate Darkwater and uncover its true motivations before regional tensions escalate into something worse..." This happens in the first mission.
Soldiers[]
It was originally thought that some of the (para)military soldiers seen in the trailer were Darkwater soldiers, consisting their masked faces and red goggles, which the series has commonly associated with enemies. In truth, these seem to be Firebrand soldiers, as revealed in the early access game release.
As seen from the trailer:
- In the second trailer, the Firebrand guys attack the base. A few combatants wearing dark sleek outfits and hoods are shown in the background, aiming weapons and red aiming lasers at them, before they are blown up while the Firebrand characters in the center of the blast are completely fine, posing and all. The combatants are probably members of Darkwater. They resemble Black Hand Ghosts.
As seen in early access (subject to change):
- They wear red and black, similar to the Black Hand in JC3. Compared to the Black Hand, the red they wear is much brighter and more prominent on their outfits.
- They have different "levels". The level of a specific soldier is indicated above their health bar. Presumably, the higher the level, the tougher and more skilled the soldier is. Names are unofficial and only exist for ease of reference.
- There are at least two known soldier types, and probably many more:
- Grunts. From the top down perspective and on a small mobile screen, it is quite difficult to see exactly what they look like, but they wear red and black outfits. They're armed with automatic, or perhaps burst fire, small arms. It is predicted that they will appear at heat 1-4.
- Female grunts. They are dressed similarly to grunts, but have more feminine figures and some have long hair. It is predicted that they will appear at heat 1-3.
- Heavy soldiers. They are visually most similar to Just Cause 3's Black Hand Titans, or perhaps Just Cause 4's Black Hand machine gunners. They wear red and black as well. It is predicted that they are like the enforcer enemy in Watch Dogs and will appear at heat 5.
- Elites. They seem to always be "Lv. 4" enemies. They look very similar to Just Cause 3's Black Hand soldiers, with the dull red and black body armour and helmet with mask and night vision goggles. It is predicted that they are the tactical response team or SWAT and will appear at heat 4-5.
"Militia"[]
In one of the missions that take place in Ajantra, there are some armed men dressed in traditional Middle Eastern outfits. Some are armed with guns, while others carry only melee weapons. They are mentioned by one of the mission objectives as "patrols", and other times said to be the "Ajantra militia". They are not always, but often hostile to the player. It's not known if they have any affiliation with Darkwater, but in Rise of the Dissidents, when the protagonist is told to obtain a chip from a Darkwater captain, Ajantra militiamen show up and attack the player. So it makes sense to assume that they are, to some extent, at least allies of Darkwater.
Trivia[]
- Darkwater might be (to some minor extent) a parody of a private military company (really just a mercenary group with corporate structure) commonly known as "Blackwater". The company is frequently being renamed. The current name is "Academi", but they are still best known by their original name "Blackwater". While it is unclear whether Darkwater is operating for its own interests (perhaps a paramilitary terrorist group?) or for money (as a PMC), it is still formed by ex-mercenaries, which is a notable similarity.
