The Hoverboard is a vehicle in Just Cause 4. It was added in the Danger Rising DLC.
Description[]
As the name implies, it's a skate-board like flying machine.
As described by Victoria Setian[]
Victoria Setian is a senior producer at Avalanche Studios. Quoted from this interview:
- "So the hoverboard is one of our new vehicles, it can go on land and sea, and it’s a brand new vehicle type in general for Just Cause. Once you’re on a magrail, the hoverboard will just go, go, go. You can change direction using the grapplehook - sometimes the pads will branch, and you just use the thumbstick to choose the branch you want. But really you just want to keep moving, and use it almost like a rail shooter, basically. You’re just constantly moving, which is especially good against the agents with their grappling hooks, when they’re moving around, and having the hoverboard to keep you moving really really helps with strategy."
- "One thing I want to point out, because I’m really excited by this, is every time you beat a base, you’re going to unlock a hoverboard course. So you’re talking about Tony Hawk - you wanna get through all the bases, and you’re going to have to get very creative about how you’re going to get through these, combining it with wingsuit, going back into hoverboard–and once you complete all bases, there’s a couple [parks] that we put on the mainland. And they are like, the top of the alpine all the way to the coast, so it’s really really fun."
The hoverboard is first seen in the mission Old Friends and New Enemies, where it's stolen from The Agency.
Performance[]
It hovers about a half-meter to a meter off the ground on any surface.
Pressing a certain button (V on PC) will activate the hoverboard. Rico will jump up, and suddenly the hoverboard just pops out beneath his feet, while the player can't see it. Rico will ride on top of the hoverboard. There is an immediate speed boost that propels him at a speed of ~30-40 km/h, give or take. He'll continue going on for a short while before slowing down and eventually coming to a stop at 100 meters from the start.
Pressing the jump button (Space on PC) whilst on the hoverboard will make Rico jump up a few meters and do skateboard-like moves on it, while travelling at the same speed. This is very useful for jumping over obstacles in order to maintain speed (crashing into obstacles will make Rico stop completely).
Pressing the same button while jumping will make Rico jump off the hoverboard. As he does this, he kicks the hoverboard up and while the player can't see, it vanishes from sight. Immediately, all of Rico's momentum is lost completely. Pressing space twice will make Rico pack up his hoverboard, open his parachute and magically bounce up a few meters.
In order to continue moving, hook anything in front of you to pull you towards that object, giving you additional speed. By doing this, you can extend maximum distance travelled on a flat surface from 100 meters to 300+ meters. When going down a cliff, you pick up lots of speed, depending on the steepness and length of the cliff. When hoverboarding down the tallest mountain in Solís all the way to the bottom, you can reach a speed of 200 km/h. In fact, you even unlock an achievement for reaching this speed on hoverboard.
If the button (V on PC) is pressed under water, it brings the player to the surface and gives the player the speed boost. When the hoverboarding is travelling on water, it creates a constant spray of foam.
On dry land it moves relatively slowly, but gains a lot of speed when moving above "electromag cables" (orange power lines) that run along the floors inside and around the the Agency submarines. It shoots lightning out of its bottom while doing so. When travelling on a cable, the hoverboard will forever travel on the rail at a steady, unchanging speed of ~40-50 km/h, unless there's any interference (such as the player pressing V again to get off the hoverboard). This is convenient for allowing the player to freely shoot at all nearby enemies in the submarines internal tunnels, while moving at a steady pace along the rail. The player may also use the grappler to pull themselves along while riding to change directions quickly and speed up. If the player has the Deathstalker Sky Striker wingsuit equipped, the player can maintain forward momentum by periodically switching to their wingsuit, boosting, and returning to their hoverboard.
Courses[]
The courses at the submarines are as follows (starting south, going clockwise). They all have a time limit of 30 seconds.
- Hull course.
- Gale course.
- Shore course.
- Cruiser course.
- Pinnacle course.
- Salvage course.
- Tightrope course.
These two are in the mountains and have longer time limits:
- Sandy Slalom course. (3:30 time limit)
- Selva Slalom course. (3:00 time limit)
There is also an unused third mainland course, which can be enabled with modifying. See a video below for what it looks like.
Location and origin[]
- The hoverboard is stored on an average-looking C3 Canvasback Hovercraft when Rico finds it during the mission Old Friends and New Enemies.
Rico mentions that "they got the hoverboard prototype working", which means that he had already seen it before when it didn't yet function.
This could be interpreted to mean that each hovercraft is equipped with one, however, no one besides Rico is seen using them.
Skins[]
A number of differently colored skins can be unlocked by completing the many hoverboard courses. Save for the mainland courses, all of them have to be completed under 30 seconds or else Rico will fail the course and have to redo it.

Trivia[]
- The Lifesaver hoverboard can be found on the south-east side of the pier in Joya del Sol by a lifeguard chair and a beach umbrella. Rico says "Radical!" when picking it up. It was made available on 2019.10.16 after a small patch.
- The first time a hoverboard was featured in a work of fiction was in the "Back to the Future" movies.
- The "Matrix" movie series also features flying ships that similarly shoot lighting out of their engines.
- The Golden and Cowabunga skins are arguably the most difficult skins to unlock.
- In the UK, the term "hoverboard" is more commonly known as a two-wheeled, gyro-stabilized electric vehicle. External link to an example.
