Just Cause 5 would be the fifth game in the Just Cause game series.
Status
The last update for JC4 (see Just Cause 4 Patch history and Downloadable content for Just Cause 4 for reference) was possibly in 2020. Just Cause 5 has not been announced yet and there are no reliable hints to it being worked on. On the internet, one may come across media stating that Just Cause 5 has been announced, but currently those are fake.
It would take years for Avalanche Studios to make another big game and there is no way to be sure which game they will decide to make next, or which game they are currently working on, for that matter.
It has also been leaked by Christofer Sundberg that the launch deadline of JC4 "broke the team" (of developers), thereby calling future games very much into question.
October 2019 job offering
In October 2019, it was noticed that Avalanche Studios is looking for developers to help create a multiplayer for their next AAA game. The job offer did not specify which game, but lists Mad Max, Just Cause 4 and Rage 2 as examples of the types of games they had in mind. The job offer also mentioned that the game will have the Apex engine.
September 2020 job offering
In September 2020, it was revealed by job offers that the Avalanche Studios Group New York division is being improved in preparation for their next development effort. It's not know what they are working on, but they are looking for a System Programmer, a Gameplay Animation Programmer and a Senior World Designer.
The requirements (1, 2 and 3) reveal some interesting details:
- "Avalanche Studios Group is looking for a System Programmer to join our ranks in creating the largest and greatest AAA project we’ve ever taken on." The page lists requirements for applicants that reveal that the game is meant for next generation consoles.
- "On this project we want to push animation quality a lot further than we have done previously and this will require us to take our animation technology to the bleeding edge."
- "As a Senior World Designer you plan, design, build and iterate the world with all its layers; world, biomes, landmarks, locations, roads and rivers. So that it connects and presents itself beautifully. This involves terrain sculpting, material painting, location building, road editing, placement of landmarks and locations."
- "Experience in sculpting high fidelity terrain (both geo and materials), believable roads and waterways; while also making those spaces a blast to play in."
Just Cause: Mobile
Main article: Just Cause: Mobile.
Just Cause: Mobile was announced on December 11th, 2020. It was a spin-off with a completely unrelated story, but still set in the Just Cause Universe. Also, the mobile game was developed by a different team.
The mobile game was delayed multiple times and cancelled in 2023.
Intel revealed by Christofer Sundberg
August 31st, 2023
Christofer Sundberg, the former head of Avalanche Studios was asked about a JC3 glitch. He responded that he wouldn't be able to help, because he's nolonger working on the series (because he had already left Avalanche to form another game development company). He added that as far as he knows, Avalanche Studios are also not working on it and that the people at Square Enix UK might be able to help.
November 2nd, 2023
On november 2, Christofer Sundberg tweeted the following: "@justcause was about to become a FPS game should our publisher Eidos had its way at the time. Fortunately, for us all, I managed to put an end to that madness. With that said, the series does not need a FPS reboot. I could see a JC2 complete remaster though. #JustCause"
This seems to imply that there is possibly a plan to reboot the game series as a first person shooter game.
December 4th, 2023
He criticized the launch time of Just Cause 4, describing it as "forced out at least a year too early" and as having "broke the team" over it, referring to developers.
Speculation about plot
This section contains spoilers for the endings of JC3 and JC4.
Based on the events of Just Cause 4
- The end of Just Cause 4 (mission Operation Illapa) sets up The Agency as the new main enemy. It is revealed that apart from supporting Espinosa in creating Project Illapa, ultimately leading to the death of Rico's father, the Agency is also willing to pay a huge fortune to buy the Storm Core and Illapa weather-controlling technology. Rico wants to go "take them down" and Tom Sheldon agrees to help him. They agree that having an army is a good start.
- The end of the Danger Rising DLC (mission Rogue Agent) expands this. Agent Maria Kane and her boss discuss their future plans. Operation Microburst was revealed to be The Agency stealing Project Illapa technology and building a new Project Illapa-like facility at a safer place. At the same time the player is shown a map of the United States where a big Agency logo appears over the north-eastern part of America.
With these two endings, it is reasonable to assume that Just Cause 5 will take place in the United States.
Based on the events of Just Cause 3
- The end of JC3's Mech Land Assault DLC (mission Storming the Hive) reveals that the Black Hand was working on something called the Global Change Project. It is possible that the aforementioned project is Project Illapa, but there was no actual evidence that the Global Change Project was Project Illapa, as the words "Global Change Project" were never mentioned in Just Cause 4. This "Global Change Project" might still be something else that makes an appearance in Just Cause 5. It's most likely though that the Global Change Project was just a cliffhanger sequel bait for JC4, because the plot of JC4 was still in very early development and they had not yet conclusively decided the name of what would become Project Illapa.
