The Mortar is a weapon in Just Cause 4.
Not to be confused with the vehicle mounted weapon that is confusingly also called "mortar", that actually launches guided missiles.
Description[]
The mortar is a usable turret-like weapon, which despite its name, is more like a field gun than anything. It stands on a tripod of sorts, with a turret that can rotate 360 degrees. Each of the 3 legs has a hydraulic piston on it.
It is in a black and red color scheme (Black Hand faction colors, like the other two turrets in the game. The ones at Army of Chaos-controlled locations are a mix of random brightly colored graffiti.)
Performance[]
The weapons exact power is yet to be measured, but it deals a little more damage than a "standard explosion" (a tank shell or a helicopter-launched guided missile, for instance). As a cannon, it has a slight arc when firing. This and the fact that the projectile flies relatively slowly, makes it very hard to aim at aircraft. But this is obviously not meant for that role. It's a weapon that provides direct and indirect fire support for allied units, against hoards of enemies. The way the projectile files on a parabolic trajectory allows the weapon to shoot behind obstacles and allows the weapon to remain hidden in its defensive position.
When used by enemies, it can be annoying as it gives very little warning other than the whistle of the artillery shell, which is rather distinctive. This can let the enemy get the first strike, but this is only if the player hasn't noticed it already and even then it is still quite easy to kill. Enemies will also use it like artillery in a way that is hard for the player to do, firing it in a high arc over obstacles and ignoring their usual line of sight programming (they'll aim as though they see you, although they can't). This can be prove pretty effective during chaotic battles like at Fronts where the player may be tied up with other enemies and be caught by surprise. This happens to be what artillery is actually used for - providing (in)direct fire support by bombarding the general area of enemies, from a distance. However, with Rico's plot armor and grappler, parachute and wingsuit, he can easily make it behind the lines and take care of the mortar.
It has as much range as any other missile launcher, or gun, and the projectiles explode at maximum range, if they have not hit anything. This is pretty strange, as artillery should be a long-range weapon.
Location[]
Black Hand[]
- At the front.
- At some bases.
- Academia Wanay - No longer spawns after the base is captured.
- Ojo de la Jungla.
- Probably several more.
Army of Chaos[]
- At the front.
- At some bases, once they're captured.
- Can be unlocked at the supply drop by completing some mission/stunt/location. Needs specifying.

Trivia[]
- See artillery for a list of all similar weapons.
- The fully rotating tripod mounted turret is rather unusual for an artillery weapon and the overall design is pretty weird.
- The bulky design can be explained by the facts that the weapon has an auto-loading mechanism and contains a lot of ammunition.
- The lack of wheels however is harder to explain, with out having to resort to complete speculation, such as the following options:
- Confusingly, there is also a vehicle mounted weapon called "mortar", which is actually a guided missile launcher.
