The Niagara 9mm Bullpup is a weapon featured in the Danger Rising DLC in Just Cause 4.

Appearance[]

It has a modern design with a white and grey color scheme as Agency colors. Orange is also present, but noticeable only in closeup views. As opposed to a SMG, this weapon actually looks more similar to a PDW. Despite its name, it is not a bullpup style weapon (see trivia).

Judging by its name, it uses some type of 9 mil ammunition.

While basically all weapons in Just Cause 4 lack any sort of attachments (save for the secondary fire of Black Hand weaponry and the magnified sights on snipers), the Niagara is attached with a red dot sight (appears similar to a coyote sight), what appears to be a suppressor, and an under-barrel handguard/barrel shroud. The RDS is not a simple seethrough reticle texture, but actually glows (more noticeable in low light levels). All three are purely cosmetic as the red dot sight cannot be used for aiming since the player cannot enter first person mode, the suppressor does not make the weapon sound quiet at all, and weapon ergonomics do not exist in this game, rendering the handguard practically useless.

The design of this weapon takes quite a few real world influences: this SMG resembles the IWI Tavor X95, as it is also available as an SMG chambered for 9mm rounds. The trigger grip is quite similar to Magpul PDR or FN P90.

Performance[]

Despite its type of weapon, the Niagara 9mm has a very slow rate of fire compared to other fully-automatic firearms (approximately 450 RPM), making it function closer to a slow-firing assault rifle than an SMG. While damage per bullet is superior to the SMG-2 or Defender Machine Gun, it fires so slowly that said weapons are still significantly more effective in most cases.

The weapon deals good damage per bullet (better than most full-auto small-arms in the game) and is capable of eliminating Agency agents (who are somehow quite tough despite the absence of body armor) in just 3 to 4 headshots at close to medium range, making it a good choice for players who have precise aim and prefer engaging at medium range rather than those who prefer getting up close and personal, spraying-and-praying with the SMG-2. However, its high damage per bullet fails to compensate for the low fire rate, making its overall damage per second much lower than other automatic guns in the game. It is highly accurate, very stable with low recoil, and has little spread even in prolonged full-auto spraying. These plus the low fire rate contradict its category as an SMG. Muzzle velocity is more similar to an assault rifle than an SMG; however, bullet drop is significant at medium to long range. Unfortunately, just like an SMG, the weapon's damage starts to drop off greatly at range.

As a slow firing SMG, it's arguably worse than the faster firing SMG-2 and inferior to the SW9 Assault Rifle in terms of damage per second and versatility, so the main reason to use it is the availability of ammunition at the Agency submarines, or the cosmetics of this weapon (with the suppressor and RDS), if the player prefers it over other small-arms. The player needs to aim well and at the head when using this - fortuneately, this is not too hard as the weapon is highly accurate. In a close quarters firefight with tougher soldiers equipped with body armor (such as Black Hand elites), the weapon will be insufferable if the player does not aim at the head; hence, it is best used as a medium range weapon, taking advantage of its high headshot damage and high accuracy. One must play this weapon to its strengths to use it effectively, as it really isn't versatile at all.

The secondary fire allows it to lock onto enemies similar to the 21-J Smart-Rifle, albeit this weapon fires single explosive rounds instead. These explosive rounds are likely the least powerful explosives in the game, as it takes two direct explosive impacts to kill a Black Hand soldier equipped with body armor and three to destroy an unarmored civilian car. Using this against armored vehicles is out of the question, as it will take more explosive rounds than the player can carry.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being called a bullpup in the name, its magazine is actually located within its grip, as seen during a reload animation. Bullpup weapons have their magazine located behind the grip. Having the magazine fitting into the grip is certainly not a conventional design, but technically isn't a bullpup, either.
    • However, the stock does look like it could fit a magazine underneath it. If the mag does go there, then it would be an actual bullpup.
  • It has quite a small magazine despite its rather large capacity. Real magazines of that capacity are usually twice as long as the grip.
  • One of the game patches changed some weapons' magazine capacities. This weapons magazine was upgraded from 100 to 260.
