Random encounters are a type of mission in Just Cause 4.
Description[]
These are optional minor sidemissions, which are triggered by simply being in the vicinity of a mission trigger. A mission may be triggered from tens to multiple hundred meters away.
There are 3 types of these:
- Some are done for the Army of Chaos, with Sargento calling Rico about it.
- Some are done for Garland King Studios. The missions are usually provided by stunt people, who get Rico's attention by yelling when he's near.
- Some are done for Javi Huerta, who calls Rico.
In any case, the reward is some small number of progress points for each boss.
List of mission types[]
For Sargento[]
- "Accidental Casualty": Sargento informs Rico that a "Black Hand spy" is on the side of a road, because their car has broken down. The objective is steal their ride to pick them up and then kill them by destroying the vehicle, in order to make it look like an accidental death, so as to not let the Black Hand know that the spy died due to being discovered.
- Also, this can happen if Rico is in a helicopter, where Sargento will ask Rico to simply pick up the spy in the helicopter and crash it.
- "Offensive Line": When near the front lines, Sargento may ask Rico to help the Army of Chaos on the battlefield. The player is given two minutes to kill as many Black Hand as possible, with each kill awarding points. The kill does not have to be done by the player, if a Black Hand soldier dies for any reason, it counts as a kill.
- "Sniper Assassination": Rico is tasked to pick up a LRD-3 Sniper on a building roof and then kill 3 civilians who are said to be spies. It's not necessary to use the sniper rifle, any weapon can be used so long as Rico stays on the rooftops.
- "Vehicle Recovery": Sargento will inform Rico that a nearby vehicle contains a "list of operatives". The player has to hijack the vehicle and bring it to some drop-off point. This one seems to be somewhat rare.
For Garland King Studios[]
- "Car on Car": Rico could be in a vehicle and one of Garland's crew in a vehicle could appear in front of Rico. Garland tells Rico to destroy the vehicle with her crew member in it without exiting Rico's vehicle.
- "Camera-Ready": A vehicle, which could be a boat, a plane, a helicopter, or a sports car will spawn next to a stunt person. They ask for Rico's help in delivering the vehicle. Once the player enters the vehicle, there will be a time limit, but it varies depending on the type of vehicle and distance needed to travel. The objective is to deliver the vehicle within the time limit to the drop-off area, while receiving as little damage as possible. The less damage, the more points received. On some occasions, the player will be asked to deliver the vehicle in a seemingly impossibly short time limit. Often times when a plane is to be transported, there will not be adequate landing area, which can result in damage (costing points) or even destruction of the vehicle (causing failing the mission and death).
- "Cyclone Cinematography": When Rico is near a tornado, a stunt person may request help getting a shot with the tornado. A car will be provided and the player must catch up to and drive into the tornado.
- "Driving Mr. Hong": Henry Hong, a location scout for Garland's movie studio, can be found along the road. The player must pick him up, and drive him to some location. Along the way, he will share anecdotes about his job, such as how he became "the invincible Henry Hong" after always returning to work after getting injured as a stuntman.
- "Lose the Fuzz": A Kerner 16' Vigeur will spawn on the side of a road, along with a stunt person. They ask Rico to quickly get into the vehicle, not elaborating any further. As soon as Rico enters, he gets heat. The objective is to lose the Black Hand, without leaving the vehicle (or dying, of course). Rico will complain about this, having been duped into driving for a shot. It's implied that the film crew is somehow filming the chase from concealed location(s) for use in the movie that is later spoken of in the mission Cut During The Chase.
- "Needed on set": Similar to Camera-Ready, but without the time and health restrictions. Just deliver the vehicle from A to B without destroying it.
- "On Location, ASAP!": Rico has to deliver a factory crate to some place as fast as possible. Points are lost the more time goes on.
- "Stunt Launch": A stunt person will be standing near two poles, usually on top of an hill, and ask to be launched into the air. This requires the player to use two retracting grappler cables and form a slingshot to launch the person. The objective is to fling the stunt person as far as possible, with the amount of points rewarded based on how far they are launched. The stunt person will thank Rico while mid-air.
- "Wire Work": A stunt person will be standing next to either a boat or a helicopter. They ask Rico to use the grappler to attach the stunt person to the vehicle for a shot. After they are attached, the vehicle will sail/fly off while the stunt person thanks Rico.
For Javi Huerta[]
- "A Crate Quandary ": One of Javi's assistants will be standing near a factory crate. He will ask Rico to deliver the crate using a boat or Emsavion Utility Heli, similar to "On Location, ASAP!". Using the grappler is imperative here. This is a somewhat rare mission type that's actually pretty tricky.
- Alternatively, the vehicle provided could be a Armadillo Crane Truck or Próspero Sky Crane, which makes the mission much easier as both have magnets that can simply lift the crate and move it, though any other means of moving the crate still work, such as attaching it to a vehicle and towing it.
- "A Precious Cargo": One of Javi's assistants will be standing near a vehicle. He will ask Rico to deliver the vehicle to some location. Basically the same as "Needed on Set".
- "A Relic to Wreck": Javi calls Rico and informs him that one of his rivals, who works for the Black Hand, is delivering a forged relic, which must be destroyed. The mission objective is either to destroy the civilian vehicle, or to murder the driver, or both. This can be encountered anywhere. Strangely the "rival" uses the character model of a Black Hand private. Note that hijacking the vehicle or attacking it in some way will result in heat.
Locations[]
Most of these missions can appear anywhere, but a few only spawn at specific set locations. The ones that involve a vehicle in traffic might indeed be random, but for example, the "Stunt Launch" requires special terrain and doesn't seem to be random at all.
- "A Crate Quandary" - There appears to be only a few locations this can spawn.
- "A Precious Cargo" - Has been seen near a small settlement in the south-west area of the desert.
- "A Relic to Wreck" - This one seems common and can possibly start anywhere.
- "Accidental Casualty" - Seems to be completely random, as long as it's on a road.
- "Car on Car" - Seems to be completely random in location. However, it only appears to happen when in a fast car and on the road.
- "Camera-Ready" - Appears to have set locations, but there are many of them.
- "Cyclone Cinematography" - Seen multiple times on the cliffs near Zona Tres, but can probably be encountered anywhere around the tornado.
- "Driving Mr. Hong" - Seems to be completely random, but will always be on a road. The end point might have set locations, but there's too many to count.
- "Lose the Fuzz" - Can start at Punto Norte. This one is probably just anywhere there's a road.
- "Needed on Set" - Has been encountered at Aeropuerto General Benítez with a very short time to deliver a plane into a forested beach.
- "Offensive Line" - Probably anywhere there's a front line.
- "On Location, ASAP!" - ?
- "Sniper Assassination" - Pretty much anywhere there's a good amount of rooftops.
- "Stunt Launch" - Probably has set locations, as it's always on a hilltop.
- "Wire Work" - Boats sometimes are at a dock, sometimes by the shore. Helicopters seem to be random.
Trivia[]
- For "Driving Mr. Hong", if the player previously failed the mission by killing Henry Hong, he will passive-aggressively note it the next time he is picked up. See the gallery for the exact quote.
- For "Stunt Launch" and "Wire Work", following the stunt person reveals they actually do survive, even after being thrown off of a building or dragged through the water at high speed. Of course, they are stunt people, so they would be prepared for this, but it seems a little silly for them to survive a 100+ meter fall with barely any protective clothing.
