The San Esperito Civil War is the main conflict dominating the storyline of Just Cause.
Description[]
The civil war started some time during the two weeks before Rico Rodriguez arrived. This is a fact because Salvador Mendoza seized power about 2 weeks before Rico arrived and by the time he arrived, there was already a well organized Guerrilla resistance operation.
Initially the guerrillas had made no progress and their leader José Caramicas had been captured and detained at the El Grande Fort. Rico broke him out of prison and with help from Rico, the Guerrillas began liberating the nation one settlement at a time.
Because the Montano Cartel was backed by the government, Rico had to support the Rioja Cartel to divert the government-friendly Montano forces away. Rico does so by helping the Rioja take over cartel villas that are under Montano control.
Over several covert operations, Rico destroys some missile bases, a power station, kills Mendoza's sons, steals a lot of money from the state bank, and more.
Eventually the chaos became so great that Mendoza had to flee to his private island, where Rico and his rebel and Rioja allies pursued. There, Rico manages to disable three nuclear missiles and eventually kill Mendoza.
As for the Black Hand, who had served as a "foreign security specialist" force assisting Mendoza and his allies during the war, they would meet Rico again years later in other civil wars.
