Solís Hoy is a radio station in Just Cause 4.
Description[]
This is the only constant talk show.
Their only show is the "Diago and Santiago Show", where the two hosts discuss politics, history, random rumors, and interview local celebrities.
The show supports the government and its hosts do not directly question it, but it's obvious that Diago is a true-believer of the official history of Solís while Santiago is less sympathetic and questions the official Espinosa narrative.
The player can listen in on the Solís Hoy with either radios found around Solís, or the radio found in most vehicles.
One of their show segments discusses different things at different times affected by the storyline.
Diago and Santiago Show segments and ads[]
This has been compiled as a retelling by stopping and continuing the game while the show is on.
- Diago has an advanced copy of the autobiography of Oscar Espinosa, called "I Am the Son of My Father". They discuss the book and reveal that his father Leon Espinosa died in a plane crash 20 years ago. This is when Oscar took over all the companies and became the head of state. The crash had apparently been caused by a tornado and this is what motivated Oscar to start the Illapa Project which is meant to end all storms. He also turned the Black Hand from "a bunch of local badasses" into who they are now.
- A Black Hand recruitment advertisement explains that they protect the sovereignty and freedom of nations and punish those who threaten "threaten the freedom and prosperity of others." They also claim to stand for order, family, discipline, and service.
- Santiago mentions the Army of Chaos and that people are joining it because they are discontent with the current regime. Diago disagrees and believes that the economy has improved under Oscar's rule and that the people can buy anything they want for their basic needs and even TVs and phones, in exchange for "an honest day's work." Santiago believes that better products are only available for the more privileged, like them, and mentions (perhaps merely joking) that he actually gets paid more than Diago when Diago responds to Santiago calling him privileged by saying that he can't help what the market will pay for his services. This subject gives them lots of callers, of whom only a few are chosen before they go to break.
- A woman calls the show and explains that Santiago must not like Solís much to have that view. She does not mind at all that she needs to work 70 hours per week to be able to afford her living, because she gets to live in the best country in the world. She also says that although she doesn't want to be mean, she feels the need to scratch off the Santiago half of her Diago and Santiago bumper sticker. To her statement, Santiago expresses displeasure and recommends she doesn't scratch his name off of her bumper sticker. Diago expresses shock at how much the woman works, and tells her to quit her job while also accusing Santiago of being not only pro-Army of Chaos, but also a revolutionary himself. Santiago reprimands him for thinking it's easy to find a new job.
- Another woman that calls in says that she believes that the Army of Chaos, whether or not they have a point about the state of Solino society being poor, are dumb to try and take on the Black Hand, as they are practically invincible. Both Diago and Santiago agree with her, so Diago moves to the last caller.
- The last caller is a man who questions the integrity of the show because they are owned by a division of Espinosa Telecom, run by Oscar Espinosa himself, and that Solinos cannot trust their opinions. His call is cut off before he can finish his thoughts, and the hosts nervously rush to break, all the while Diago talks about firing their phone screener, Rafael.
- Santiago invited Diago to talk about his favorite TV show, which he apparently can't shut up about when they're off the air. Diago explains that it's a historical show set about 500 years ago and the main character is Diego Espinosa de Málaga, an ancestor of Oscar Espinosa. Diego Espinosa was the first European to set foot on Solís and he is portrayed by his actor on the show as the most handsome man Diago has seen in his life. He is excited to explain that Diego Espinosa was a skilled marksman and fighter. During the first season of the show, the Espinosas show the Qacha tribe that they are people who they should want to be friends with. They become allies of the Qacha and start a civil war against a rival tribe, the Allpa (or Aipa). The war was fought against their evil king Otorongo. Diago doesn't want to spoil more of the show and he's amazed that Santiago hasn't seen any of it. Santiago says that he's more into reading, and tells Diago that they have the actor who plays his hero on the phone for an interview. The actor's name is Jacobo Rojas, and he is the man who plays Diego Espinosa in the show Diego el Santo. Diago is very excited to ask about the next season. He mentions that during the previous season, the Espinosas had already united the Qacha and Allpa tribes and eliminated all their threats. Even the bloodthirsty warlord, Otorongo, had been killed. Rojas explains that the tribes are still not a part of the colony and that there are dangerous factions within each tribes who do not appreciate the benevolence of Diego's rule. Diago asks if the he does his own stunts because the action is intense when he's, for example, crushing indigenous uprisings. Rojas says that he does most of his own stunts, as he feels that he must be very true to the role, as he is portraying a real human being that's also the ancestor of the great and powerful Oscar Espinosa. Diago also asks if Rojas has met Oscar for research, although he confirms that he has not, mentioning that Mr. Espinosa is a very busy man and would not know much more than anyone else about the characters being portrayed, as they had been dead for hundreds of years. Diago still wants Rojas to ask Oscar about Project Illapa if he gets the chance to meet with Espinosa, since he claims that Santiago keeps bothering him about it. Rojas refuses. Diago then asks if he was really naked in all the intimate scenes with several women on the show and if he was ever intimate with them off-screen, making Rojas nervous, leading to him saying that he's being instructed to end the interview. Santiago then mocks Diago for his very unprofessional interview. Diago explains that he got nervous.
- Commercial for a restaurant chain called El Rancho Viejo (in Spanish, literally 'the old ranch'), which serves traditional Solino food. The speaker says that ordering food from their restaurant is like visiting your abuela (grandmother), but that you'll be in and out in less than five minutes.
- They discuss local rumors. This segment is updated with recent news as the game progresses.
- Esteban from Quya writes in an e-mail that a helicopter crashed in the rainforest near there. He went snooping around and found that the helicopter has no Black Hand markings and that the Black Hand were investigating the site. Esteban was then told to leave the site, which he did.
- Andrés calls in and has a story for them. He's been a worker at Mina Vendaval for a long time, and was there when the mine was struck by a tornado which destroyed the mine, killing many people, and went on to cause grave damages and casualties in Nueva Voz. This is the same tornado after which Torre Espinosa was constructed, which was later destroyed in Operation Windwalker. Mina Vendaval now has wind cannons to protect the area, but he notes that the construction of the cannons began before the tornado, implying that the Black Hand knew that the tornado was coming before it came, something which baffles Diago.
- Traffic around the hotels of downtown Nueva Voz is hectic due to General Fernando Torres visiting Solís. He is the ruler of an unnamed nearby South American country. They also mention that he is a very good customer of Grupo Próspero. Santiago mentions that the general has human rights violations in his nation and questions if it's morally acceptable for Solís and Grupo Próspero to sell him weapons. Diago believes that it's okay because he provides jobs and aids the economy in Solís.
- The next rumor is that there is an American film crew in the nation and doing death-defying stunts. The film crew does not have a permit from the Solino Film Association, so they mention that the film crew could get arrested, but agree that it will likely be a great movie.
- Diago scolds Santiago about the next story because their show is about wild but true rumors, not wild conspiracy theories, but Santiago still tells it. Apparently someone whose name Santiago won't reveal has sent an e-mail about how he noticed the Black Hand behind an apartment door one night and the next day that neighbor was missing. Diago dismisses that as the person just being at work, but Santiago insists that it took place a week ago and their e-mailer still hasn't caught a glimpse of their neighbor. Santiago then mentions that this is not the first time they've heard of this type of disappearance. Diago insists that the listeners are just pranking Santiago for being gullible, but Santiago segues into the next story that this one reminded him of:
- La Mazmorra. According to Diago, this is a ghost story that parents tell their teenage kids to make them get back home at a before curfew on school nights, insisting that there is no secret place to which the boogyman whisks people away. The story refers to the La Mazmorra prison, featured in the mission Mazmorra Rescue.
- They mention it when the Prospero Astillero ship factory is taken over by the Army of Chaos and speculate that that must be a big blow to the Black Hand.
- They mention when Zona Dos is discovered (after the player completes Operation Thunderbarge). Santiago mentions that it's a big weather research base and says that Oscar Espinosa seems to have kept Project Illapa's true progress under wraps. He also finds it odd and strange that the area was previously always covered by a storm. Diago considers Santiago's interest in that fact idiotic, telling him that it's a rainforest, and that having perpetual rain there should be no surprise.
- After the mission Operation Windwalker, the hosts talk about the large tornado that hit Nueva Voz and say that, according to the Solino Weather Service, the winds were up to 480 km/h (although wind is usually measured in meters per second, so it would be reported as 133 m/s). They say that one can safely assume that these are the strongest winds ever recorded on the planet (although, depending on whether or not they occurred in the Just Cause universe, several tornadoes in the United States, particularly Oklahoma, have beat wind speeds of 480 km/h or just under 300mph). They report that, although almost all of the city's buildings were strong enough to withstand the force of the tornado's winds, the only building destroyed was Torre Espinosa, which was constructed after the previous tornado hit the city ten years previously. The tower had been built with a dedication to those who died in that tornado, and Diago mentions this while chastising Santiago for joking about Torre Espinosa being neither wind nor irony-proof. They disagree on who arranged the city to be evacuated. Diago says that it was the Black Hand with their years of disaster response experience across the world, but Santiago has heard that it was the Army of Chaos, as they were wearing uniforms that were any color other than black, if they could be called uniforms at all.
- General Fernando Torres has left Solís, so traffic around the hotels is all clear again.
- After the mission Operation Sandstinger, they have a story from the desert. Someone called Huyeta (spelling?) reports that they've had a lot of sandstorms during the last few years, but the storms have nearly completely cleared away over the last few days. Also, the train from Estación Perdida was seen running for the first time in years. Santiago continues to tell that there have been some interesting reports about the Army of Chaos activities in the desert, but Diago interrupts him to scold him about telling rumors and mentions that Santiago's old friends have been sending them some nasty e-mails about that already. He also scolds Santiago that it's not like the Army of Chaos would have fixed the weather. Santiago ignores him and explains that the Army of Chaos has been fighting the Black Hand everywhere, Gran Central, Prospero Torretas, "all over the place". He suggests that the Black Hand should spend less time e-mailing them and... He's interrupted by Diago who's confident that the Black Hand will win in the end.
- When Rico spawns right after the mission Operation Illapa, there's a radio near him with this radio station playing at the start of this segment. Santiago is happy to report that Oscar Espinosa has been killed. Diago is disappointed and quiet most of the time. Santiago tells him that while he is a professional broadcaster, Diago is only a disappointed man-child who's pouting because he was backing the wrong side for all these years. Santiago continues to report that sources differ on the details of the event, but Oscar's plane went down during a storm and there are no survivors. The future of all the Espinosa holdings (the major companies) is uncertain. Diago asks him why they are even reporting then and Santiago explains that it's their duty as broadcasters and because he was starting to feel guilty because automated deposits of money continued at his bank account, which made him guilty. He continues to report that many of the Black Hand have defected and joined the Army of Chaos, but some factions within the Black Hand refuse to surrender despite the news. He urges them to lay down their arms so the people of Solís could focus on rebuilding. Diago mentions that it's so they can all be traitors together. Santiago continues to report that the de facto leader of the rebellion is Rico Rodriguez who according to international news, is a former operative from an American intelligence agency known as The Agency. He would like to know more about Rico and wonders if it's good that Rico prefers change through violence. He also wonders if they just replaced one "strong man" for another. Diago then interrupts him to say that Santiago has been complaining about the government for years, so he should be doing backflips out of happiness now, instead of complaining again. Diago says that many of the factories where the lower classes had been oppressed have been taken over by the Army of Chaos and to give the "new guy" a chance instead of complaining. He continues to explain that Santiago should just enjoy the ride and that this time when things start going wrong, he'll be right by Santiago's side to complain and point out the problems. Diago mentions that this kind of complaining is why he never wants to hang out with Santiago after the show. He explains that one way of Diago getting out of spending time with Santiago is by lying about writing a novel and reveals that really he can barely read. Santiago agrees and mentions that as long as someone continues to pay them. They then wonder what to do next and say that normally they'd play a pre-recorded interview, but those haven't aged well (in light of the recent news), so they need to play music or something. Diago then asks Raphael to cut to commercial.
- There's a commercial for Prisa Automóvil.
- Diago begins a segment of the show by telling listeners that the Diago and Santiago Show is brought to them by Grupo Próspero, pioneers of Solino security for over 50 years. Santiago finds this fact weird, and says that he's done some research on the Grupo Prospero, saying that they have an interesting list of clientele. Diago immediately interrupts him to scold him about having already cost the show some lucrative sponsors in the past, listing various companies who refused to sponsor them while Santiago states reasons that he dislikes their products. Santiago continues to explain that Grupo Prospero is the main weapon and vehicle manufacturer for the Black Hand and that they produce some of the finest in the world, meaning that it's odd for the company would advertise itself on the radio because the listeners are unlikely to want or be able to purchase any of their products, proceeding to list absurd situations where they would, like purchasing an attack helicopter to commute to work or installing a backyard turret for home defense. He continues to complain that they sell weapons to anyone who can pay and that this is bad because some of the buyers are "interesting characters" (one of whom being the aforementioned General Fernando Torres, an accused war criminal and violent dictator). Diago interrupts him again to scold him because he could get someone on the show fired, although likely not himself as he's considered indispensable to the show. Diago lands on Rafael, one of their operators, being the most likely target of firing, and Diago dissuades Santiago from continuing to attack their sponsors because Rafael's wife would leave him if he lost his job on the show.
- Grupo Próspero advertisement. It explains that the company provides all the tanks, weapons, and equipment for the Black Hand. The company is over 50 years old and contributes greatly to Solino economy, providing thousands of jobs for anyone willing to work hard. They proudly support the Black Hand.
- Santiago is a former Black Hand member who served a tour and then got assigned to Solís. They discuss how Solís was always the quiet place to serve until now, with the Army of Chaos' revolution. Diago is disappointed to hear that Santiago was never in a combat, never got to call out interesting stuff like "I'm going to hang you up by your guts!" and that he never served with any of the Black Hand's major disaster relief operations in other parts of South America, South-east Asia, and Africa, where the Black Hand have helped countless people rebuild after major disasters. When Diago begs him to tell him that he wore one of the Black Hand's characteristic masks, Santiago responds that back when he served, the Black Hand did not wear masks when they served in Solís, and that this is a new development which he finds a little disturbing. He was proud that the people he helped knew who he was and knew that he was there for a good cause. Diago disagrees and calls that kind of thinking treacherous because you don't need to worry about the Black Hand if you're a law-abiding citizen. The discussion ends with more yelling about civil rights vs. security. They go to commercial.
- Wine commercial, "Vino la Gema" (literally "gem wine" or "wine of gems"). It is advertised as a drink for lower to middle-class workers who return from a hard day's work wanting only to be treated with respect, but whom have an annoying spouse and attention-starved kids. Vino la Gema is, apparently, a libation of choice for the wealthy, but at a reasonable price. The ad ends with the speaker saying "You may not be able to afford a palace, but you can still drink like royalty."
- 3 commercials for the soap opera Jovenes y Bellos. In the first one, a man asks his wife/girlfriend to go to the amusement park. The woman declines and explains that she cannot ride the roller coaster, for she is pregnant. The man asks how can that be, for he has been sterile since a mining accident. The woman says that he is not the father. The show's antagonist, Gustavo, interrupts and says that he is [the father]. In the other commercial, a man named Nicolás is arguing to a woman named María that his mother's will clearly states that the oldest living heir will inherit the family company, and that she does not share even a drop of the family's blood. However, his mother interjects, asserting that María is not only his sister, but his twin, and eight minutes older, as well. Another man comes in, interjecting "Not if I have anything to say about it!" Nicolás, María, and their mother then cry out in unison, "Gustavo!" In the third commercial, a woman is on vacation with her lover, exclaiming to him how happy she is to be free of her husband. The man replies "I as well, mi amor." However, they are interrupted by a man barging through their door, who shouts "I haven't gone anywhere, amorcito!" The woman then shouts "Gustavo!"
Glitch or purposeful loop after Operation Illapa[]
After Operation Illapa every time the player turns on this radio station, it always starts playing from the start of the last rumors and news segment.
It could mean that the game developers wanted every player to hear that important news, or that the station went out of business and left that last news story playing on a loop following the death of Oscar Espinosa and victory of the rebels.
Trivia[]
- Lanza mentions during the mission Operation Sandstinger that Rico has grown up to become a "strong man". Santiago then wonders after Operation Illapa if they have "replaced one strong man with another," referencing how Oscar was replaced by Rico as the leader of Solís.
- While listening to the radio, the listener can very clearly see that Diago and Santiago have plenty of problems with each other, with very incompatible personalities. One advertisement for the show even features listeners encouraging others to listen in on their show with statements like, "I love these guys!", "Love them, or hate them, you've got to listen." and "Did you hear what they said!?"
- One of the show's producers/off-screen staff, Rafael, is mentioned occasionally on the air, generally as a pitiful, menial and incompetent man who could be removed from the show with little negative affect toward its operation.
- Diago's German voice actor, Nicolás Artajo, is actually a radio host in real life.
