The Thresher is a DLC vehicle in Just Cause 4.

Description[]

It's a two door amphibious sports car, shaped like a shark. It's armed with two machine guns and has a laser pointer for aiming.

This vehicle is an easter egg to a series of scenes from the "Austin Powers" comedy spy movie series, where the villain Dr. Evil demanded to have "sharks with laser beams attached to their heads".

The car seems to be quite modern. The hood can be removed by being damaged, revealing an internal combustion engine at the front. Water propulsion is provided by a big exhaust port in the rear that seems to be the same kind of thing as on the back of a jet ski. The water in-take for the water engine seems to be a small grill on the bottom, between the rear wheels (which is actually smaller than the exhaust port).

There are small damage-removable panels above the rear wheels that reveal unidentified machinery.

The vehicle has 7 fins, all but 1 of which turn when the vehicle turns. These make it seem like the vehicle might be able to function like a submarine, but it doesn't actually dive. The right bottom corner of the HUD, that normally shows a manufacturer logo, also has a shark fin icon.

The doors open upward, like a Lamborghini. Unusually for a car, it has no mirrors.

Performance[]

Land performance[]

It has sports car handling. It won't spin out on asphalt, but driving on dirt, or grass, results in easy tire spin, which can made use of for drifting. It has a nitrous speed boost and the "turbo jump" ability. It jumps like 100 meters at full speed, but not very high.

If a pursuer tries to pit-maneuver it, it normally ends up upside down on the side of a road, but the car will always roll itself onto the wheels, when flipped over.

  • Speed without nitrous: 224 km/h.
  • With nitrous: 285 km/h. The maximum speed can be reached before the nitrous run out.

Water performance[]

Like a speedboat. The speed boost and jump also work in water. The nitrous let it accelerate faster, but don't give additional top speed.

Jumping in water is a tricky business. It always lands nose first (unless the player stops accelerating and balances it like any other vehicle mid-flight) and when it hits water, it dives a little, causing the vehicle to flip over and near instantly turn 180 degrees. This is a fast way to turn around, to avoid pursuers. This might also depend on waves.

  • Speed with out nitrous: 159 km/h (85.85 knots).
  • With nitrous: 159 km/h.

Combat[]

It's armed with a laser and two machine guns, but they fire together and only straight forward, and stop working once ammo runs out. The laser is assumed to be there to aid in aiming.

The machine gun has 2000 rounds and sounds like a minigun, but the actual rate of fire is slow enough to last for several minutes of continuous shooting. On land the range is about 50 meters, allowing the driver to easily clear a path into a roadblock, or other obstruction. The machine guns seem to do a lot of damage per bullet, so unarmored enemy vehicles blow up pretty quickly. The rate of fire is too slow to clear a path through an opposite lane of traffic.

Locations[]

It's a part of the DLC "Shark and Bark Vehicle Pack". Once the DLC is purchased and downloaded, the vehicle appears at the supply drop.

Trivia[]

  • Meaning of the name:
    • There is a species of shark called the Thresher Shark.
    • Some people have at first glance misread it as "Thrasher", which sounds similar to "trasher", which would mean something that turns things to trash.
    • There is also such a thing as a threshing machine. In the same meaning, a "thresher" can also be a person who does the same task without machinery.
  • The rate of fire has possibly been updated to make it faster, but this is uncertain. It sounds as fast as a minigun, but depending on the situation, it may be difficult to hit something at speed.
