Turrets (name revealed by AR scan) are large automated weapons in Just Cause 4.
With a name this generic, it is easy to confuse them with at least 20 other weapons. See also: Artillery and Vehicle mounted weapons. As a fully automated device, it is also a type of drones and robots in JC4.
Description[]
It's a slightly futuristic large roughly cube-shaped automated turret, with multiple large weapons attached to it.
They are only ever seen mounted on a stationary platform (or on a submarine, which are stationary vehicles) and there's no question why: They are simply too large to be moved in one piece by anything less than a quarry truck (like the Armadillo 9M), or a ship (like the Spearhead Transport).
Performance[]
They can rotate 360 degrees and shoot to... possibly about 50 meter range (needs confirmation). This is one of the most dangerous NPC weapons in the game. While this weapon does not too much damage to heavy armored vehicles like tanks, it is devastating to infantry, APCs, helicopters and even potentially dangerous to Rico.
Weapon description | Weapon performance | When the turret uses it | Rarity of the version |

On the left side is a large gun barrel that seems to be a railgun. This is the "normal" variant. | It works the same way as Railgun Artillery. This is powerful enough to seemingly kill Rico in 1 hit. In truth because of the way the game works, nothing can 1-hit kill Rico, but because there is no health bar, it's hard to tell when he is only missing 10% of his health. It can destroy a Warchief Assault Tank in two hits. | The turret aims at Rico when he is within its line of sight. | All except 1 unique one. |
On the roof is a big additional box that launches missiles. | These are guided, but not very well guided. They can easily blow up most vehicles with in 2 hits. | Occasionally they seem to launch these at random (like at the testing valley, they may be randomly launched at the hills), but if the player tries to enter an unarmored or lightly armored vehicle, they'll find the vehicle being blown up almost immediately. Tanks can withstand multiple hits but will eventually be destroyed. The turret seems to prefer to use these when the player is hidden behind something, or when the player is in a vehicle, or on a parachute. | All turrets. |
Some turrets have a large mortar on the right side. The barrel is rifled and about 300-400 mm. A few Black Hand ones have this. | This is also a powerful explosive weapon. | The turret uses this when the player is hidden, but can be hit by the parabolic trajectory of the projectile. |
|
Some have a minigun on the right side. | This is another line of sight weapon. As a minigun, it has incredible fire rate and shreds through infantry (and is a threat to Rico if he's on foot). | The turret uses this while waiting for the railgun to charge. | Agency ones at their submarines. |
Energy field. | It can push Rico a few meters further away and seems to hurt him a little. It also puts him into ragdoll for a few seconds, giving enemies a chance to peper him while he's down and unable to retaliate. | This is used when the player gets with in a few meters to a turret. | All turrets. |
While this is an assumption, they look moderately armored, no more than a medium tank. Strangely, the game decides to make them not only more durable than heavy main battle tanks but completely indestructible unless you remove the protective panels and destroy the insides (see below).
How to avoid and destroy turrets[]
- When having to be near them, notice that each weapon makes a distinct sound. This is a small warning, giving enough time to immediately grapple into any direction.
- It's possible to temporarily disable a turret by grappling the railgun to the ground. This prevents it from firing and rotating. The turret can still use all other weapons, but they are easier to avoid.
- Don't bother to shoot at the turrets except at their exposed parts. For some reason, they are somehow completely indestructible (infinite health) unless you damage the internal parts.
- Each Black Hand turret has two metal panels, marked with X. These are service lids that cover vital internal components. One of these is normally on the rear wall. The player must first use the grappler (Retractor Mods) to connect the turret to the ground, so that it couldn't rotate and it would be safe to approach. Then use additional cables to pull these panels off. The internal parts are fragile and can be destroyed with any weapons.
- The Agency owned turrets lack the X-panels, which leaves their fragile parts exposed. The Agency turrets are mostly white, so the bright orange fragile parts are easy to spot. This means that it's possible to remotely destroy the turrets by launching missiles at them from beyond their engagement range.
Locations[]
Upon capture of the region, the turrets (if they weren't destroyed before-hand) all disappear. The only exception is at Prospero Torretas.
- Location unknown. Unique turret without a mortar and without a railgun.
- Prospero Torretas has at least 10. The base has all types (except Agency). These are all safe to examine, once the base is captured by the Army of Chaos. These turrets remain in Black Hand faction colors even after base capture.
- Some are around the base perimeter.
- At least 2 are at a testing area where they keep shooting railguns at targets.
- At least 1 (with a mortar) is on the roof of a building in the middle of the base.
- Puerto Málaga had at least one of the normal variant.
- Zona Tres had at least one of the normal variant.
- Valle Soledad - a valley in the desert, south of Prospero Torretas. It has about 18 of the plain ones. These remain active forever until they are destroyed. It seems to be a testing area of sorts. This location is featured in the mission Scene: Vanessaaaa! Some of these have a mortar.
- Gran Central has 2 of the normal type. These seem to remain in Black Hand control even after base completion and area capture, so they'll start blowing up nearby Army of Chaos soldiers as soon as the player is near enough that everything spawns.
- In the mission Jungla Scatter at Ojo de la Jungla. This one is normally hidden under doors in the ground. It comes out during the mission and becomes very difficult to avoid. This one is a plain version (only railgun, missiles and force field).
- In the mission Desierto Launch at Ojo del Desierto. This one is normally hidden under doors in the ground. It comes out during the mission and becomes very difficult to avoid. This one is a plain version (only railgun, missiles and force field).
- In the mission Pradera Blastoff at Ojo de la Pradera. This one is normally hidden under doors in the ground. It comes out during the mission and becomes very difficult to avoid. This one is a plain version (only railgun, missiles and force field).
- Several Agency submarines have a few of these. Some of them have a mortar and they all lack the protective X-plates.
- The Agency cruiser next to USS Conquest has 1 of its front deck.
- The Agency cruiser next to USS Westward has 1 of its front deck.
- On the front deck of USS Whitefeather. This one has a minigun. This turret is so comically poorly placed that if the player enters the submarine and goes into the room below the turret, then the turret can help kill some enemy soldiers and destroy some of their critical equipment. That's because the blasts from the missile explosions have enough range to reach the room below.
- On a floating platform near USS Westward.
- Multiple on floating platforms around USS Codetalker.
- Multiple on floating platforms around USS Visionary.
- USS Statesman has 3 turrets on the roof and another 3 to 4 are on the open doors.
