The Warchief Assault Tank is a tank in Just Cause 4.
Appearance[]
It's a large, well armed, heavily armored tank. While it is called an "assault tank" in-game, these type of tanks are in reality defined as main battle tanks. The Warchief is visibly the heaviest (most armored) tank in the game. As a main battle tank, its main armor would be composite and/or modular applique (there are multiple overlapping armor plates that can be seen when the tank is damaged). It also visibly has sloped armor, side skirts and possibly what appeas to be reactive armor (sometimes, a Warchief's armor plates may bounce out when recieving a heavy blow. There are also some things on the hull front that look like reactive armor bricks). However, none of this is functional in the game, they are all cosmetic items and effects.
Its chassis most closely resembles the Israeli Merkava Mk3 or Mk4, however the turret is mostly fictional, only partially reminiscent of the real life Merkava Mk4. To some minor extent, it resembles the American M1 Abrams. The Warchief looks like the Abrams a little more when in desert camouflage as seen in a mod (see gallery). It might also have taken inspiration from the PL-01 chassis (except larger) with the turret slightly resembling the Leopard 2's turret.
All Black Hand tanks that haven't been captured by the Army of Chaos are marked A10, and then three horizontal lines. The text can be found printed in white on the tank's front mudguards.
When damaged, the side mudguards and skirts come off, revealing the fact that those vent-like areas on the rear end of the sides are just there for looks. Armor plates/panels that look like reactive armor or something will also fall off, and smoke comes out.
On either side it has 7 road wheels, an idler (same size as a road-wheel, but different design), 4 return rollers (that hold the track up) and the sprocket. The sprocket being at the front is a feature that was very common on tanks in the 1920s to 1930s, but became very rare in the late 1940s. It shows that the gearbox is at the front of the vehicle.
The turret front corners are asymmetrical and there's a coaxial machine gun on the left side of the gun.
Very strangely, the tank has no hull hatch at all, meaning that all crewmen enter through the turret. There are 2 hatches on the turret and Rico enters through the right one.
Although this is a seemingly heavily armored tank armed with a main gun and a machine gun, Just Cause 4's equalization system still makes this vehicle only capable of taking three explosive rounds before blowing up. This means that in terms of in-game health, this tank is almost no better than its other lighter counterparts, the Falconer AA Tank, Pointman Scout Tank, and Prizefighter Tank (the Warchief is still a little more durable than said tanks, but that difference is more or less insignificant).
Performance[]
It is very slow to accelerate. As a tracked vehicle, it can turn a full circle on the spot, but it can be spinning its tracks in the opposite directions as it does this.
As an MBT, maximum speed is 82 km/h. Maximum reverse speed is 13 km/h.
It has 300 main gun shells and 750 machine gun rounds.
The suspension is completely functional, in that it can have different road-wheels at different altitudes, but the torson bars don't actually move.
It's really heavy, but can be lifted by a couple airlifters set on "high". It is heavy enough to derail a train head-on, and armored enough to survive it, though barely (assuming it was at 100% health before ramming the train).
The Warchief Assault Tank is the most armored, most durable ground vehicle in Just Cause 4. While an MBT like this should be able to withstand a lot of punishment, its "HP factor" is programmed just like all other armored vehicles (and the large helicopters) in JC4: being able to survive 2 "standard" explosions before the third destroys it. This is a result of equalization. The Warchief is still slightly more durable than other armored vehicles, but the difference is subtle in intense vehicular combat.
In-game, it is only slightly more durable than an APC or attack helicopter, though in real life a main battle tank like this would be able to sustain much more damage than an APC or attack heli. Note that a player operated tank might be able to survive 4 explosions before the fifth one blows it up due to the fact that Just Cause programs player-controlled vehicles to have much better performance.
The DLC Hellbender large armored hovercraft may be just as durable, or maybe even more.
Versions and locations[]
Black Hand variant: This is the stock version. In-universe, all others are captured from the Black Hand since the manufacturers support the Black Hand only, as can be noticed in several militarized factories occupied by the Black Hand, spread across Solís.
- Used to chase Rico during a high level of heat. However, it is possible to encounter some without heat around the Qachas region and in other Black Hand regions that aren't adjacent to the front line.
- At the front, but not near the start of the game.
- Appears in some missions:
- Parked at the La Mazmorra outpost before the mission.
- In Los Demonios DLC, the tank often spawns around an "infestation" sphere, with sandbags around it, almost reminiscent of the front line mechanic. They will often shoot into the purple sphere hoping they hit a demon and not a Black Hand soldier.
- Several are parked at Prospero Tanques.
Army of Chaos variant:
- Is unlocked in supply drop by completing the mission Windwalker: Diversion.
- 2 Army of Chaos ones appear at the end of the mission Thunderbarge: Ion Coil Delivery. While this is probably the first time the Army of Chaos version is seen to many, it is possible to see one before this mission.
- Can spawn in traffic uncommonly.
Racing gangs one (Dare Devils of Destruction DLC):
- Several of them have been captured and moved to Isla Santuario. They've been painted bright orange with a few green markings. Do not touch these tanks. They've been rigged to explode. They function as dangerous obstacles on the sides of racetracks.
- They also appear in all racing missions as a destructible for points.
Demonic version (Los Demonios DLC): These captured Black Hand vehicles are not driven and only function as stationary artillery. However, they move just enough to avoid easy destruction.
- At certain "infestations", along with the infestation at Isla De Los Annilos.
- Some of the ones in the mission Extermination keep respawning.
Trivia[]
- In reality it would be a main battle tank rather than an "assault tank", a concept that died out in the years of WW2.
- It's extremely unusual for a tank of its size to not have any hull hatches. Normally the driver has his own hatch on the hull roof in front of the turret.
- Lifting it with the Armadillo Crane Truck will make the tank freak out and start chaotically dangling on the cable. Dropping it from 3 meters or higher will somehow blow it up.
- If Rico grapples to a specific point under the tank's hull, once he bumps into the tank he will usually levitate for a moment, trying to reel in, before the game's collision models kick him out. However, if the player does it right, there is a small (about 1 in 5 chance) that Rico will reel under the hull and glitch into the tank. He'll stay there for a moment before standing up and teleporting to the top of it. A few seconds later, Rico will experience a delayed reaction of being launched 20 or so meters into the air.
- This and the Pointman Scout Tank are the first tanks to be actual tanks in the game series, as the others are in reality classified as APCs, IFVs and various other types of armored vehicles.
- Just like all other tank-like tracked vehicles in Solís, it takes about 3 "standard" explosions to destroy.
- This is just like all the previous games in the series, where there is never any difference what causes an explosion. All vehicles are specifically programmed to survive an X number of explosions. JC2 introduced weapon upgrade levels and JC3 and JC4 have introduced additional super-weapons (such as lightning/bavarium/railguns), but not counting those, the other explosions are normally equal. For example: In JC1 the strongest helicopter could survive 1 explosion before the second would bring it down and the strongest armored vehicle could survive 3 before the fourth destroys the vehicle. In JC4 the larger helicopters and all armored vehicles have all been equalized to surviving 2 before the third destroys the vehicle. However, using a machine gun to pepper an armored vehicles and eventually destroy it after prolonged fire (which in reality is almost impossible) and timing the time it needs to destroy it reveals a small difference in vehicles' armor and durability, like the fact that tanks are still slightly stronger than attack helicopters or APCs.
- See the Equalization section in Vehicles in Just Cause 4 for more details.
- As the heavily armored, turreted land vehicle in the game, this can be considered a successor to the CS Odjur from Just Cause 3. However, the Odjur is not a tank and does not appear to be very modern either.
- Initially, the Black Hand version of this vehicle seemed to be very rare outside of heat. As of August 2021 though, it is not uncommon to run into one in a Black Hand region.
