The Whaleshark is a ship in Just Cause 3.
Appearance[]
The Rebel drop description states: "Once a vibrant sector of the national economy, Medici's fishing fleet amounts to little more than these half-rusted hulks, battered from decades of daily use."
It's an ocean-going fishing ship. This type of fishing ship is designed for the deployment and collection of big nets and for the storage of a lot of fish in its cargo hold.
The main deck is higher at the front and there are stairs connecting the areas of the ship. The captains cabin is on the higher front area.
All the ships are marked as "JZ149", as a reoccurring license plate and "Trencho Del Vita", as a reoccurring name. There's also a depth scale near the front at both sides with numbers from 13 to 18, but it's unknown what units those are meant to be.
The hull is always high enough out of water that it indicates that the cargo hold is empty.
The whole ship is always tilted back, unless going at full reverse.
The ship is available in multiple different colors, but is always rusty.
There's only one propeller, but two throttles on the dashboard, so there might be two engines powering the same propeller.
Equipment on the ship[]
- The middle of the ship has two cranes for lifting fish nets. Their frame forms a mast.
- 2 non-functional inflatable liferafts in their plastic containers, on the right side of the front area.
- 4 orange lifebuoys, connected to the outer walls of the cabin.
- The rear edge of the ship has 3 rolls of fish nets. These rolls can be rotated by the player.
- 18 blue balloons and 4 tires hanging over the edges. These can be used to prevent damage when the ship is at a dock, but similar balloons can also be used to suspend a net by its edge.
- 2 radar antennas. 1 on the cabin roof and the other at the top of the mast.
- 4 of some kind of spear-like buoys, connected to the left side of the rear area.
- 1 blue bucket, connected to the rear wall of the cabin.
- 2 crates. 1 at the right front corner of the rear area and 1 at the front of the cabin.
- 2 ladders built into the hull exterior on both sides of the front area. They only go down to the loaded waterline and are probably meant for use at a dock.
- 1 cabinet at the back of the captains cabin.
Performance[]
It can get up to a sustained speed of 24 knots and may momentarily reach 25.
Locations[]
- Common around the coasts of Insula Fonte and Insula Dracon, as well as further out to sea.
- 2 at Vico Spigola.
- Colle Salrosa.
Trivia[]
- It seems to be a successor to the Trawler from Just Cause.
- While the real-life whaleshark is an ocean-going filter feeding shark, the boat's appearance and the combination of "whale" and "shark" in its name may be a subtle nod toward the vessel "Orca" from the movie Jaws (1975).
- It is capable of transporting vehicles and artillery across large bodies of water. Cars and armored vehicles can be loaded onto the vessel's stern deck through a side opening when docked, or hoisted aboard by grappling them to its crane.
- Just Cause 4 reuses many Just Cause 3 vehicle models. This one is reused as Fishing Boat.
- The recurring name "Trencho del Vita" (interlingua for "slice of life"), may be a nodge to the US television series "Dexter", in which the protagonist, a serial killer, owns a fishing boat called "Slice of Life", which he uses to dump the bodies of his victims into the ocean. This seems to be an easter egg.
