Windmills (not actually named in the game) are a type of notable buildings in Just Cause (1).

Not to be confused with wind turbines, which are machines that produce electricity.

Description[]

These are big industrial buildings that harness the power of wind to (most commonly) power millstones that are used to manufacture flour and other powdered substances. A small number of civilians are present at the windmills, even when Rico arrives at night time.

The buildings are multi-story tall stone towers with a wooden room at the top. The door is inaccessible and the windows have wooden hatches/lids covering them. One side of the top room has a large 4-bladed propeller and the other side has several wooden beams that in-universe are used to rotate the top room 360 degrees to keep the propeller facing the wind (or away from it when not in use).

The base of the tower has a walkway around it, at a little more than 2 meter altitude, to provide access to the lower tips of the propeller and to the rotation beams on the back.

The propellers are functional and will instantly destroy a helicopter, should one be hit. On real windmills, the propeller blades are angled, which is how wind is able to push them, but this is not modelled in the game, making them flat.

The reason why the propeller blades are a mesh of a lot of square holes is that historically, these holes could be individually covered with thin wooden panels. Covering more, or less of them allowed the mill to operate at a consistent speed in varying wind speed. This work had to be done by hand, with a tall ladder, so it was typically done to account for seasonal weather rather than daily weather.

Real windmills were commonly operated centuries ago, but have since the invention of electrical machinery become rare. More about real windmills at wikipedia.

Locations[]

There are an unknown number of them in San Esperito, but most likely around 10.

Glitch[]

Main article: Just Cause Bugs and glitches.

  •  PC   The propeller can sometimes be stationary (not spinning). Sometimes, it may be stationary for a number of seconds, before it suddenly moves for a half a second, only to stop again.
  •  PC   Also sometimes (possibly only at some specific windmills), the propeller may be spinning in the wrong direction. The pole (thick edge) of a propeller blade should always be the leading edge.
